The first day started with a long and rather intense climb, but we were rewarded with incredibly beautiful views of the Scottish countryside. The path has taken us through woods, across fields, along the River Tweed, through quaint villages, and occasionally through someone’s yard. A few people in the group took a little side trip to tour some beautiful gardens, and they were delighted to meet the owner of the estate – Lord Lothian, who is a former member of Parliament under Margaret Thatcher. As we walk, we frequently encounter locals who greet us and stop for conversation. One man, when told that we were walking St. Cuthbert’s Way, replied, “Ah, you are pilgrims then?” Yes, we are. Before we start out on our walk each morning, we gather to pray together, and then we are sent out with the words, “Go in peace and walk in the ways of the saints,” to which we reply, “Thanks be to God.” We are thankful for the opportunity to enjoy incredible scenery, get to know each other as we walk and talk, and spend some quiet time with God in His beautiful creation.
