Day 3 - Sarria to Portomarin

June 7th, 2019

First day of walking the Camino!   Sarria to Portomarín, 22 KM, 14 Miles

Greetings from Galicia in Northern Spain!

When our bus from Madrid dropped us off last night at our hotel in Sarria, it was pouring down rain.  The forecast for the next day was rain all day and low forties in the morning.  We all put on positive faces but I think we went to bed thinking walking all day in the cold hard rain was going to be quite a challenge, both mentally and physically.  We had all prepared to be hot on the Camino— not cold.

But all of the prayers that were emanating from the Alfonso IX hotel were heard!  We woke up to sunshine!   It was so good to get the long-awaited journey underway.  While we had light rain off and on—and one group found themselves caught in sleet near the very end of the day— the sun lit our path much of the way.   God is good!

When we all gathered for a devotion and to share communion in the evening, there were smiles all around and joyful reflections on the day.  Here are a few to give you a taste of the experience:

We have walked in beautiful countryside beside pilgrims from Good Shepherd and many other places. The wildflowers were stunning and the views were heavenly. What a privilege it has been to walk on this ancient path!  To God be the glory!

I so enjoyed the beautiful rolling hills, numerous gorgeous flowers, and quiet trails that wound through the Galician countryside.

Fitbit readings confirmed more than 30,000 steps and at least 65 flights climbed (likely steps+grade elevation).

I am so thankful the rain was less than expected today! We experienced the quiet stillness and the beauty of the countryside all along the way. I am most thankful for the love and community among our fellow pilgrims who help each other down the wet steep and rocky path at the end of today’s journey.

As in life, sometimes God points you in different directions. You deal with whatever direction you choose.  (Relevant to signpost with opposing arrows).

And so, a big lesson today was that God provides us with what we need when we need it.  He is ever present and guiding our path- regardless of our choices.  We experienced the love and support of fellow pilgrims, a broader sense of community in the body of Christ, and the reassurance that we never walk alone.

Wishing you a “Buen Camino” wherever your path may take you today!!
