Day 5 - Sunday - Palas de Rei to Melide

June 9th, 2019

Hello Good Shepherd Flock

I am writing on the night of Pentecost from Melide. A city famous for it’s cooked octopus (which several of our pilgrims enjoyed at the end of today’s journey.)

This morning at worship you heard the story from Acts 2 of the first Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came with the sound of a rushing wind and filled the disciples and they began speaking in other languages.

What a commotion that must have been!

Each day when we begin our journey we spend the first hour walking in silence.  It allows us to listen for God and also the sounds of the Camino.

There are many sounds:

Roosters crowing, birds singing and cooing, dogs barking, cows mooing, the clomp, clomp, clomp of hiking boots on the trail, the click-clack of walking sticks, the whirring of bike tires from those who are biking the Camino.

And we hear various languages being spoken.  I wonder if that’s what it was like on the first Pentecost?  We hear Spanish, French, Asian languages, German.  We may not understand each other, but there is one phrase that we all know.  It is the phrase that all Pilgrims say when they pass each other.  The phrase is “Buen Camino” which is a sort of blessing, hoping the other will “have a good path or road.”

That one phrase unites us on the journey.  We understand each other, just like the Pilgrims in Jerusalem understood, even though they spoke other languages.

So tonight dear reader we wish you a”Buen Camino” wherever your path may lead you, God is right beside you. God speaks your language.

God is walking with you. Take some time for silence and just listen.

Note: She later added this photo and caption.

Every day before we start walking we say this prayer together.
