Day 6 - Monday - Melide To Aruza

June 9th, 2019

We left Melide under a bright sun.  After crossing through the town’s main roads, the Camino path opened into a wooded area that set the stage for most of our day.  Along the 9 mile stretch, the beauty of God’s creation felt almost overwhelming at times.  Beauty everywhere- in waves of Foxglove, in the fragrant eucalyptus trees, in the persistently tall ferns.  Countless cows sitting in the sun. Magpies taking flight and sprinting through the sky as streaks of color.  Sheep grazing (on what we think was kale), in a yard shared with a handful of lazy chickens and a mama dog with pup.  The smiling Spaniard who leaned heavily on a cane and pointed to the house where his parents lived across from a tiny church.  It is a good day to walk.  A good day to breath in the smell of fresh, God given air.

Every day my backpack grows lighter.  The first day of hiking, my backpack was full to the brim. It contained everything I thought I needed for the day.  It grew heavy on my shoulders.  Each night as I ready my pack for the next day, I leave more and more behind in the suitcase that will be delivered to the next hotel.  A lighter pack frees me up to experience the day with more energy.  Walking the Camino can be difficult at times.  Energy comes at a premium as we take solid step after the next up and over hill after hill.

Walking lighter creates space to see beauty...in nature and in my fellow pilgrims.  The beauty of community, of shared faith and purpose.  The beauty of love and solidarity in the face of pain or struggle.

The sun sets late in Arzúa. By 10pm, the sky looks like dusk in Cincinnati.  We’ll leave tomorrow amid the things that have become a familiar part of trekking mornings.  I am thankful for the steps, the pilgrims.
